Symposium & Expo Re/Building Brussels on February 10, 2022
EXPO, SYMPOSIUM & VERNISSAGE | 10.02 – 27.03.2022 | Halles Saint-Géry, Brussels
10.02 – 27.03.2022 – Expo
The urban space of the Brussels-Capital Region is constantly evolving. Countless contractors, carpenters, plumbers and other artisans have made Brussels what it is today. However, the sector faces specific challenges. To understand its complex needs, researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel take a new, interdisciplinary look at the Brussels building sector in the project ‘Re/Building Brussels’, in a historical and contemporary perspective, from 1695 to the present day.
This exhibition presents some of the research results. It shows the changing relationship between the building sector and the city: Who are Brussels’ construction entrepreneurs? How do they work? And where do they find the necessary production space in the city? Some pressing challenges emerge from this. They form the starting point for the continuation of the research, where the question is how the construction sector can be a pioneer in the creation of a circular economy, and how it can create local employment that contributes to an inclusive labour market in Brussels.
10.02.2022, 13:00-17:00 – Symposium Re/Building Brussels
This symposium will present the results of the research project ‘Building Brussels’, which focused on the composition and organisation of the Brussels building sector and how space can be made for construction companies in the city. It will then introduce the follow-up project ‘Rebuilding Brussels’, which examines how the construction sector can be a pioneer in creating a circular economy and an inclusive labour market in Brussels.
