EN – Post-war building materials

The website & book have been created as a basic instrument to shed light on the development and applications of innovative building materials and techniques in house building in Brussels (and Belgium) in the period 1945-1975. They will assist a broad group of stakeholders, ranging from architectural and construction historians, restoration and renovation architects, to building administrators and owners, in recognizing and valorising typical post-war materials. This research will help them to link brand and product names with their fabrication, and understand their applications.

FR – Matériaux de construction d’après-guerre

Le site internet et le livre sont élaborés comme un outil de base pour faire la lumière sur le développement et la mise en œuvre des matériaux et techniques de construction innovantes dans la construction résidentielle bruxelloise (et belge) entre 1945 et 1975. Ils permettent à un large panel de parties prenantes, allant des historiens de l’architecture et de la construction aux architectes restaurateurs et rénovateurs, en passant par les administrations et propriétaires, de reconnaître et valoriser les matériaux typiques de l’après-guerre, de lier les marques et les noms de produits à leur fabrication, et de comprendre leur utilisation.

NL – naoorlogse bouwmaterialen

De website en het boek zijn opgevat als basis-instrument om een licht te werpen op de ontwikkeling en de toepassing van innovatieve bouwmaterialen en -technieken in de woningbouw in Brussel (en België) in de periode 1945-1975. Ze kunnen worden gehanteerd door een ruime groep belanghebbenden, waaronder architectuur- en constructie-historici, restauratie- en renovatie-architecten, administraties en eigenaars, om typische naoorlogse materialen te herkennen en te valoriseren. Met dit werk wordt het mogelijk om producten en merknamen te koppelen aan productiemethodes, en inzicht te krijgen in de toepassing ervan.

Understanding and conserving the postwar housing stock in Brussels (1945-1975). Retrofit for continuity!

The project was carried out by Stephanie Van de Voorde in collaboration with Ine Wouters, Inge Bertels, Ann Verdonck and Filip Descamps, all members of the ReUse team of the æ-lab (research lab for architectural engineering), Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

The research was funded by the Brussels Capital Region through the Innoviris Strategic Platform Environment 2012: Brussels Retrofit XL (www.brusselsretrofitxl.be).
