The collaboration with the Serralves Foundation takes place within the exhibition THE SAAL PROCESS: ARCHITECTURE AND PARTICIPATION, 1974-1976, at the Serralves Museum, from October 31, 2014 until February 1, 2015, and the CONFERENCE SAAL: in retrospective (Serralves Foundation Auditorium, May 10, 2014).

The colloquium in Coimbra, on architecture and the project of participation, will explore, in general, the housing problem, in particular, the legacies of “SAAL” (i.e. the Ambulatory Service for Local Support), the mid-1970s aided self-help program created during the Carnation Revolution in Portugal.” Today, SAAL permits us to reflect, to question ourselves and to debate the issues and challenges of housing as well as its close relationship with architecture.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Serralves Conference is the starting point for a discussion that will extend until November with the opening of the Coimbra Colloquium and the inauguration of the Exhibition. The articulation between the various stages is intended to complement the perspectives, methodologies and research instruments about SAAL.

In this context, the scientific and professional community is invited to submit papers on the four themes above:

74 – 14 SAAL – ARCHITECTURE # PORTUGUESE

74 – 14 SAAL – ARCHITECTURE# AUTONOMOUS

74 – 14 SAAL – ARCHITECTURE # INCLUSIVE

74 – 14 SAAL – ARCHITECTURE # TRANSRELATIONAL

Whereas the call for papers will be open from April 21 to June 30, it is proposed that the Serralves Conference introduces research perspectives that may be deepened in the Coimbra Colloquium.

The Colloquium has four official languages: Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and English.
