SYMPOSIUM | Fri. 10 & 17/6, 11:00-12:30 | online

Hosted by the SAH (Society of Architectural Historians) Connects series, the second HIG (Historic Interiors Group) annual emerging scholars symposium, will take place in two parts on Friday, June 10th and Friday, June 17th at 12 PM EDT/5 pm BS.

This year’s theme, developed by Emerging Scholars Committee Members Laura Jenkins, Lauren Drapala, Michelle Jackson-Bennett, and Vanessa Vanden Berghe is “Digital Interiors.” As the call for papers explains, “The shift to virtual work and learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has provoked lively debate among scholars and students about the benefits, and risks, of substituting digital platforms for built space. More sustained attention is required, however, to assess the impact of digital media on interiors as a discipline – particularly where the interiors involved predate digitization as either a resource or a methodology.”

Addressing a wide range of issues from globalization to community access, preservation to pedagogy, this symposium will consider digital and new media from the perspective of the historic to elucidate the ways in which they interact with, improve, complicate, or threaten the study of traditionally material culture and analog records.”

Eight speakers from the US, UK, Italy, Poland, The Netherlands, and Canada, and, institutionally, from universities, museums, heritage and preservation organizations, and design firms will present their work. Their presentations will cover a range of exciting topics in the field of historic interiors digitally, from using projection mapping to recreate lost color schemes to tracking geographic trends in interior decoration with GIS software. We expect a lively discussion about the implications of these technologies (good and bad) for existing and emerging practice.
