085459_2013 WroclawThe International DOCOMOMO Technology conference, illness  Re-learning Modernism for the 21st Century? will take place in Wroclaw, help Poland on Friday 13 and Sunday 15.09.2013.
The leading theme is “Preservation Technology & Practice”, the other themes are: “Modernism & Borders”, “Education” and “Re-interpreting Modernism”.

Developing on Wroclaw’s unique Modern heritage, the conference will create a platform to share ideas and showcase best practices that make the modern movement relevant in today’s world. We are looking for examples of activities from around the world that demonstrate how modernist architecture takes on new meaning through education, public diplomacy and dialogue, private initiatives and business ventures as well as conservation and urban renewal projects.
In proposing „Re-learning Modernism for the 21st Century” we are building on the unique modernist heritage of Central Europe with special focus on the vibrant Polish city of Wroclaw. As early as 1900, in this once-German metropolis of Breslau, the Academy of Arts, under the leadership of Hans Poelzig, launched a pioneering educational program where tailored programs and workshops produced novel solutions for real-world projects in rapidly changing urban context around them. The well-grounded, highly practical education program used Breslau as an urban laboratory, which meant that faculty and students understood key issues and problems of the city and region, and took active part in discussions and searches for viable, innovative solutions. It is also earned the city the label of having produced the “Bauhaus before Bauhaus”.
The conference will be a focal point in the 100th anniversary celebrations of the creation of Max Berg’s Centennial Hall and Exhibition Grounds, Wroclaw’s most daring contribution to modernist discourse. Opened in May 1913, Centennial Hall remains dynamic, multifunctional meeting place serving Wroclaw and the region. Added in 2006 to UNESCO’s register of World Heritage Sites, Centennial Hall is undergoing a rousing revitalization effort – to be completed prior to 2013 – that is infusing this iconic modernist landmark with new significance and vibrancy for the 21st century.

The conference is organised in cooperation with the International Scientific Committee Technology (ISC-T) of Docomomo International in collaboration with Wroc?aw University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture, Wroc?aw Museum of Architecture,…
