CONFERENCE | Fri 03.12.2021, 18h00 | Auditoire Victor Bourgeois, Brussels

For more than 200 years engineers have used reduced-scale physical models to help design buildings, especially for innovative projects and when engineering theory has been inadequate. Without models, the remarkable thin-shell reinforced-concrete structures by Eduardo Torroja, Heinz Hossdorf and Heinz Isler, and the structures of Frei Otto in the 20th century, would have been impossible. The lecture will present some important projects from this history, and will discuss the modelling of wind and seismic actions on buildings, acoustics and air movement in naturally ventilated buildings, which remain important uses of models today.
