The Belgian Building Research Institute is proud to announce that it will be hosting in collaboration with public institutes from Brussels, viagra order Flanders and Wallonia the second edition of the International Conference on Energy Efficiency and Comfort of Historic Buildings from October 19th to 21st, 2015 at the Royal Library in Brussels.

The Conference will include over fifty innovative peer-reviewed research papers on topics ranging from assessment and monitoring, to regulations, management and training, as well as sustainable interventions. Four keynote speakers will also present their ideas and findings during the conference. On the third conference day delegates will have ample time to explore the rich engineering, architectural, artistic and cultural offerings of the City of Brussels during the unique guided tour in Brussels that will be offered.

The call for abstract is now open.

The main conference topics are available here:

1. Regulations and historic buildings: legal boundaries
Are current regulations concerning energy efficiency, fire safety, accessibility, heritage protection, etc. adapted to historic buildings? How do they conflict?
How can interventions be tailored to meet legal requirements while preserving the building’s value?

2. Preliminary assessment: identifying the boundaries
How are the opportunities and limits for interventions identified?
Which assessment methods can be used?
Which aspects should be taken into account before designing interventions for energy efficiency and comfort improvement in historic buildings?

3. Sustainable Interventions: between tradition and innovation
How do technical interventions influence the global hygrothermal and material balance?
How can we simulate the real-life impact of different interventions?
How to promote the implementation of sustainable (life cycle circular economy) solutions?
How can traditional behaviours, materials and designs contribute to energy efficiency and comfort, and where do we need innovative techniques?

4. Governance, management and participation: from design to day-to-day use
How can interventions be designed to facilitate energy efficiency and reaching comfortable conditions in day-to-day use?
How can actual user behaviour be taken into account from the planning stage onwards?
How can governments and building managers develop policies to stimulate and support respectful energy efficiency and comfort improvements in historic buildings?

5. Monitoring and evaluation: providing feedback
How can post-occupancy monitoring provide useful information on the impact of different interventions?
How can post-occupancy monitoring & simulations provide useful information on the actual thermal behaviour of a building?
Why are building performances not according to plan? Are some discrepancies particularly frequent?

6. Promotion, (e-)training and education
Which groups of stakeholders should be educated in order to optimise the process of energy-efficiency and comfort improvement in historic buildings, and how?
What are the existing methods and experiences?
