docomomo International has the pleasure to announce that the 14the International docomomo Conference -“Adaptive Re-use. The Modern Movement Towards the Future” (Lisbon, 6-9 September 2016) will be opened, on 6th September 2016, by the keynote lecture by Alvaro Siza and Juhani Pallasmaa, through an informal dialogue between the two. Other confirmed keynote speakers are Anne Lacaton, Jean Philippe Vassal, Joan Busquets, Winfried Brenne, Caruso St John Architects, Rem Koolhaas, João Luís Carrilho da Graça and João Gomes da Silva

Alvaro Siza
Born in Matosinhos, Porto, in 1933. He studied in the School of Fine Arts in Porto and worked with the Portuguese architect Fernando Tavora between 1955 and 1958. He taught at the School of Architecture (ESBAP) from 1966-69 and was appointed Assistant Professor of Construction in 1976. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Ecole Polythechnique of Lausanne, the University of Pennsylvania, the Los Andes School in Bogota and at the Graduate School of Design of Harvard University as Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor. Juhani Pallasmaa
Born in Hameenlinna, Finland, in 1936. Graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1966. Finnish architect, educator, and critic, Architect SAFA, Hon. FAIA, Int FRIBA.
From 1991-98, Pallasmaa was dean and professor of architecture at the School of Architecture, Helsinki University of Technology. Previously, he served as rector of the Helsinki University of Applied Arts and professor of architecture at the Haile Selassie I University in Ethiopia. He has held visiting chairs of architecture at institutions in the Americas and Europe, including the University of Virginia, Catholic University of America, and Yale University. From 2001-03, Pallasmaa was the Raymond E. Maritz Visiting Professor of Architecture at Washington University; he has since continued to work with students in the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design´s Helsinki international semester program. Joan Busquets
Born in El Prat de Llobregat, Spain, in 1946. He graduated from School of Architecture, Escola Tecnica Superior d´Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB), University of Technology of Catalonia, in 1969 and received his doctoral degree from the University of Barcelona, in 1975. Joan Busquets headed the Planning Department of the Municipality of Barcelona between 1983 and 1989 and during the preparations for the Olympics in 1992. He was Professor of Town Planning in the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona from 1979 until 2002. Since 2002 he has been a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and holds the chair of Martin Bucksbaum Professor in Practice of Urban Planning and Design. Winfried Brenne

Caruso St John Architects
Adam Caruso and Peter St John established their practice in 1990, and have gained an international reputation for excellence in designing contemporary projects in the public realm. The practice came to public attention with the New Art Gallery in Walsall, a commission won in an international competition in 1995. From these origins in the visual arts, where a sensitivity to experience and context is required, the practice has extended its expertise and now works on a broad range of projects in the public and private realms. Rem Koolhaas
Rem Koolhaas founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975 together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. Having worked as a journalist and script writer before becoming an architect, Koolhaas graduated from the Architectural Association in London, and in 1978, published Delirious New York, a Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. In 1995, his book S,M,L,XLsummarized the work of OMA and established connections between contemporary society and architecture. João Luís Carrilho da Graça
João luís carrilho da graça, architect, graduated from esbal (lisbon higher-education school of fine arts) in 1977, the year he initiated his professional activity. Lectured at the faculty of architecture of the technical university of lisbon between 1977 and 1992. Professor at the autonomous university of lisbon from 2001 to 2010 and at the university of évora since 2005. Headed the architecture department at both institutions until 2010. Invited professor at the higher technical school of architecture of the university of navarra in 2007 and 2010. Invited lecture in seminars and conferences at several international universities and institutions. Awards given to João Luís Carrilho da Graça include: the title of “chevalier des arts et des lettres” by the french republic in 2010; the “pessoa award” in 2008, the “luzboa-schréder” award in 2004 at lisbon’s first international light art biennal, the order for merit of the portuguese republic in 1999 and the “international art critics association” award in 1992.
Distinguished with the “piranesi prix de rome” prize in 2010 for the archeological museum of “castelo de são jorge”, the “fad” prize in 1999 and the “valmor” prize in 1998 for the knowledge of the seas pavilion at lisbon expo ’98; the “secil” prize in 1994 for the school of media of the i.p.l (lisbon polytechnic institute), and the nomination for the “mies van der rohe” european architecture award in 1990, 1992, 1994, 2009, 2010 and 2011, this year for the pedestrian bridge over the carpinteira stream and the archeological museum of Castelo de São Jorge”…

João Gomes da Silva
Graduated in Landscape Architecture from the Universidade de Évora in 1987, and lectured there as an assistant from 1987 till 1994. Since 2001 he is an invited professor at the Architecture Department of the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. He has also been invited to lecture in several other universities, and has participated in conferences and workshops, within the scope of Landscape Architecture and Landscape, both nationally and internationally. In 1997, he founded Global Landscape Architecture with Inês Norton, creating a group that generates landscape theory and space, from the interpretation of the economic, social and contemporary cultural transformations. He has dedicated his professional life, individually or in collaboration, to the critical production of Landscape.
In 1990-91 he is awarded the Schinkel Prize, in Landscape Architecture, with Inês Norton and João Mateus, in Berlin, Germany. With the project for the Public Spaces of the Expo´98 precinct, he is awarded the Prize of the Portuguese Design Centre, in 1999. In 2004, he is awarded with the Valmor and Municipal Prize of Architecture by Lisbon´s City Hall, for the Expo´98 project, in co-authorship with Architect Manuel Salgado. With the Salinas Landscape Project in Madeira, in co-authorship with Architect Paulo David, he is awarded in 2007 the FAD Award, in Landscape Architecture, the International Stone Architecture Award, and in 2008, the Audience Award in the V Landscape Biennial, in Barcelona. In 2010, with the Cycling Track – Belém_Cais do Sodré segment, in co-authorship with Atelier P06, he is distinguished with the following awards: Red Dot – design Award; SEGD – Merit Award; D&AD-in Book e European Design Awards – Silver Award.
