11.12 Opening new museum & Art Centre ADAM Brussels
A new museum and art centre in Brussels, ampoule dedicated to design and art from the XXth century until today, situated next to the Atomium
Initiated by the Atomium Exhibitions Department [Atomium Expo], the Art & Design Atomium Museum (ADAM) is the result of a dual objective. One aim relates to the Atomium’s role as a tourist attraction and a cultural and educational centre. With this in mind, the department was keen to organise exhibitions on a larger scale than the limited space available in the Atomium. The other aim was to provide the best possible setting in which to display an exceptional design collection [the Plasticarium]. Its former owner [Philippe Decelle] wanted the collection to remain together and to formpart of a museum project for Brussels.
Launched in the 1980s, this remarkable collection, the only one of its kind in the world, comprises several thousand plastic objects, from the most commonplace everyday items to works of art.
Over 1,000m² are set aside for temporary exhibitions devoted to 20th and 21st century art and design.
ADAM Its permanent exhibition, the Plasticarium, and its temporary exhibitions explore and showcase themes related to art and design from the 20th century to the present day.
The season will be inaugurated by Eames and Hollywood, which will reveal through exceptional pictures one of the lesser-known aspects in the work of the designer couple Ray and Charles Eames: photographers and chroniclers of their times. Armed with a camera, they immortalized life behind the scenes of Billy Wilder’s Hollywood film sets.
Later, some of the most exciting pieces of a private collection dedicated to the New Realists will be displayed in our second temporary exhibition space: ARTVIEW#4. A view on contemporary art.
And finally, INTERSECTIONS#4. Belgian design, the fruit of a collaboration with the Centre d’Innovation et de Design (CID) of the Grand Hornu, will bring the year to a close. Through a selection of its most recent acquisitions, the CID will be sharing its approach, its challenges and its prized pieces.
