Architects’ Journeys is a collection of monographs on architects who left their mark on the built landscape of Brussels after the First World War. The collection focuses on the output of architects whose work is less well known, but their intimate relationships with the city make this survey all the more worthwhile. Each volume highlights a singular career path, both factually and figuratively, revealing the built heritage as well as the little-known and little-studied facets of the capital’s urban history.

This volume devoted to Antoine Pompe (1873–1980) rediscovers the original work and thinking of a central, independent figure in the birth of modern architecture in Belgium. One of his first projects, Dr Maurice Van Neck’s orthopaedic clinic in Saint-Gilles (1910), was one of the most innovative buildings of its time. For 15 years, Pompe was involved in the work of the avant-garde, notably in the garden city movement. Despite his concern to build economically with sober, rational forms, he refused to abandon his interest in the emotional dimension of buildings, and he distanced himself from the purist aesthetics of the modern movement. He thus pursued the development of an ‘architecture of reason and feeling’.

Parcours d’architectes est une collection d’ouvrages d’architecture traitant de façon monographique de l’œuvre d’architectes ayant marqué le paysage bâti de Bruxelles après la Première Guerre mondiale.

La collection s’attache au parcours d’architectes dont le travail est moins connu du grand public mais qui gagnerait à l’être tant il intègre une relation intime avec la ville. Chaque volume met en lumière un parcours singulier, au sens propre comme au sens figuré, dévoilant le patrimoine bâti autant que les facettes mal connues et peu étudiées de l’histoire urbanistique de la capitale.

Ce volume consacré à Antoine Pompe (1873-1980) propose de redécouvrir l’œuvre et la pensée originales d’une figure centrale et indépendante dans la naissance de l’architecture moderne en Belgique. L’une de ses premières réalisations, la clinique du docteur Maurice Van Neck à Saint-Gilles (1910), s’impose comme l’un des bâtiments les plus novateurs de son époque. Pendant quinze ans, il s’engage dans les combats de l’avantgarde, notamment dans le mouvement des cités-jardins. Soucieux d’une pratique économique aux formes sobres et rationnelles, il refuse néanmoins de renoncer à la dimension émotive et s’éloigne de l’orientation puriste que prend le mouvement moderne. Il poursuit alors l’élaboration solitaire d’une « architecture de la raison et du sentiment ».

Architectenparcours is een reeks die bestaat uit monografische gidsen rond het oeuvre van architecten die hun stempel hebben gedrukt op het stedelijke landschap van Brussel na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De collectie focust op het werk van architecten die minder bekend zijn bij het grote publiek, maar die door hun intieme band met de stad des te meer erkenning verdienen. Elk deel belicht een uniek parcours, zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk, en onthult niet alleen het gebouwde erfgoed, maar ook de onderbelichte en amper bestudeerde facetten van de urbanistische geschiedenis van de hoofdstad.

Dit tweede deel van de reeks is gewijd aan Antoine Pompe (1873–1980) en brengt de originele realisaties en ideeën van deze architect opnieuw onder de aandacht. In het ontstaan van de moderne architectuur in België was hij een centrale en onafhankelijke figuur. Een van zijn eerste projecten, de kliniek van dokter Van Neck in Sint-Gillis (1910), behoorde tot de meest innovatieve gebouwen van zijn tijd. Vijftien jaar lang was hij een voorvechter van de avant-garde, vooral met betrekking tot het concept van de tuinwijk. Hoewel hij zich inzette voor een economische aanpak gebaseerd op sobere, rationele vormen, weigerde hij de emotionele dimensie op te geven en distantieerde hij zich van de puristische richting van de moderne beweging. Hij streefde daarom als enige de ontwikkeling na van een ‘architectuur van de rede en het gevoel’.
