A special afternoon of architecture, culture, and Caribbean perspectives (in English)

What happens when two Caribbean islands tell the story of modern architecture at different rhythms?

Join us for a special dialogue between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, exploring how architecture has been shaped by development agendas, tourism economies, and geopolitical positioning. Looking beyond the familiar rhythms of merengue and salsa, Alex Martínez-Suárez and Ivonne María Marcial-Vega will reflect on MoMo architecture as both a cultural expression and a political project, revealing unexpected connections, as well as important differences, between the two islands.

Speakers

Alex Martínez-Suárez is a Dominican architect, researcher, and curator. He holds an advanced master’s degree in architecture from the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands and a graduate degree in museum studies from Harvard University. He is director of Archipiélago, a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to architecture, academic research, and cultural production.

Ivonne María Marcial-Vega is a Puerto Rican architect, photographer, and educator. She holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Puerto Rico and studied fine art photography at Institute Saint-Luc in Belgium.

The event is organised by DoBE and hosted by the University of Antwerp (UA) in a beautiful setting. The evening will conclude with a reception featuring drinks and bites from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, offered by the Embassy of the Dominican Republic.

(NL) Algemene voorwaarden
- Inschrijvingen voor activiteiten zijn pas definitief na betaling van de deelnamekosten en eventuele verificatie van de lidmaatschapsstatus.
- Bij annulering van de activiteit worden de deelnamekosten zo snel mogelijk volledig terugbetaald. Hetzelfde geldt in geval van overboeking.
- Annulering op vraag van de deelnemer is mogelijk, met in achtneming van volgende spelregels:
§ Registraties voor deelname aan een activiteit kunnen probleemloos doorgegeven worden aan een andere persoon, mits eventuele bijbetaling van een vermindering toegekend aan leden, wanneer de effectief deelnemende persoon geen lid is.
§ Tot maximaal 7 dagen voor de activiteit: volledige terugbetaling, verminderd met 5 euro administratiekosten.
§ Wanneer de terugbetaling een gevolg is van het niet correct doorgeven persoonlijke gegevens (in het bijzonder de lidmaatschapsstatus), worden eveneens 5 euro administratiekosten in mindering gebracht.

- Les inscriptions aux activités ne sont définitives qu'après paiement des frais de participation et vérification éventuelle du statut de membre.
- En cas d'annulation de l'activité, les frais de participation seront remboursés intégralement dans les plus brefs délais. Il en va de même en cas de surréservation.
- L'annulation à la demande du participant est possible, dans le respect des règles suivantes :
§ Les inscriptions à une activité peuvent être transférées sans problème à une autre personne, sous réserve d'un éventuel supplément pour la réduction accordée aux membres, lorsque la personne qui participe effectivement n'est pas membre.
§ Jusqu'à 7 jours avant l'activité : remboursement intégral, moins 5 euros de frais administratifs.
§ Si le remboursement résulte d'une transmission incorrecte des données personnelles (en particulier le statut de membre), 5 euros de frais administratifs seront également déduits.

- Registrations for activities are only final after payment of the participation fee and verification of membership status, if applicable.
- In the event of cancellation of the activity, the participation fee will be refunded in full as soon as possible. The same applies in the event of overbooking.
- Cancellation at the participant's request is possible, subject to the following rules:
§ Registrations for participation in an activity can be easily transferred to another person, subject to any additional payment of a reduction granted to members, if the person actually participating is not a member.
§ Up to 7 days before the activity: full refund, minus 5 euro administration costs.
§ If the refund is a result of incorrect personal details being provided (in particular membership status), 5 euro administration costs will also be deducted.
