Theme & Call for Papers (deadline before 8 January 2024):

In the realm of modernist interior architecture, design and art, women have made significant but often overlooked contributions. This conference Modernist Women Interior Designers and Artists: Deepening the Reading of Different Expressions of Female Creativity aims to shed light on the multifaceted and diverse creativity of women within the Modern Movement. As we celebrate their innovative work, we invite scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts to submit papers that explore and expand upon the roles of women in shaping modernist interior spaces.

The Modern Movement, characterized by its commitment to the development of a better life for all, is marked by widely celebrated male figures such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, while numerous women designers and artists made equally remarkable contributions to the modern production. This conference aims to fill this historical gap and promote a deeper understanding of the many ways in which women shaped the modern culture.

Papers on a wide range of topics are welcome, including but not limited to:

– The architectural and interior design work of modern women designers and artists.

– The role of women in the Modern Movement interior design production.

– Innovations in material and technology by woman designers.

– Explorations of how female creativity intersected with politics, society, and culture during the Modern Movement.

– The influence of socio-political factors on the work and recognition of modern women designers and artists.

– The intersection of gender, modernism, and artistic expression.

– The influence of modern women designers and artists on contemporary design and art.

We encourage interdisciplinary approaches, fostering discussions that span architecture, design, art, history, and gender studies. By examining the often-overlooked contributions of women, this conference aims to deepen our understanding of the rich and diverse creativity developed in the 20th century. Join us in celebrating the innovative spirit of modernist women interior designers and artists by submitting your research to this conference. Together, we will honour their invaluable contributions and broaden the discourse on female creativity.
