Call for abstracts: Symposium on Young Heritage (1975-2000)

SYMPOSIUM | 06-07.02.2024 | Royal Library, Brussels

Call for abstracts: deadline before December 15, 2023

VUB Architectural Engineering and urban.brussels kindly invite you to the International Symposium on Young Heritage (1975-2000). The symposium takes place at the Royal Library in Brussels, on February 6-7 2024. The core objective of this symposium is to provide valuable insights into the current state of knowledge regarding the built heritage from 1975-2000 and the contemporary challenges associated with its preservation. We aim  to gather knowledge from across Western Europe and to bridge the gap between policy, research, and practice. By seeking points of intersection among these domains, we aspire to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in preserving these younger architectural treasures.

The event will encompass a series of four keynote lectures delivered by esteemed scholars and experts in the field: Kees Somer [Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed, the Netherlands], Harry Lelièvre [urban.brussels], Eric Monin [Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture et de Paysage de Lille, France], Andreas Putz [Technische Universiteit München, Germany].

Each of the four keynote lectures is linked to one of the four thematic sessions: 1) value assessment, 2) policy instruments, 3) building materials, 4) restoration and conservation. More information on the four sessions can be found here. We cordially invite prospective participants to contribute to the symposium by means of a short presentation (10 to 15 min) in one of the four thematic sessions. Those interested in presenting are kindly requested to submit an abstract.

Call for abstracts.

If you would like to contribute to the symposium, please submit an abstract via email to Marylise.Parein@vub.be before December 15. The document (pdf) should contain: the title of your presentation, name(s) of the author(s) + affiliation(s), 300-word abstract, 1 image (free of copyrights, 300 dpi, also as a separate file, jpg or tiff), the session to which you want to contribute, 4 keywords related to the topic of your presentation.

You will be notified on the acceptance of your abstract by January 8, 2024. The contributions will be published in a digital book of abstracts. Participation is free of charge, but participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.

Preliminary programme:

February 6, 2024, 1 pm – 5.30 pm: welcome, session 1: value assessment, session 2: policy instruments, closing drink

February 7, 2024, 9 am – 5 pm: introduction, session 3: building materials, session 4: restoration and conservation, lunch, guided visit (EN/FR) to La maison médicale (UCL), Brussels

Registration for the symposium will be available soon.

Organising committee: Marylise Parein [VUB], Stephanie Van de Voorde [VUB], Ine Wouters [VUB], Tom Verhofstadt [urban.brussels], Manja Van Haelen [urban.brussels], Stéphane Demeter [urban.brussels].
