The Architectural Archives of the Province of Antwerp and the Flanders Architecture Institute are hosting an international congress as a prelude to ‘Stynen Year’ in 2018. The Belgian architect Léon Stynen (1899-1990) epitomises an entire generation of post-war modernist architects whose oeuvres and profiles share many similarities.

The congress convenes on Thursday, 7 December, with a full day of presentations, followed by a keynote lecture by Prof. dr. Adrian Forty (Bartlett School of Architecture). The lectures continue the next morning, concluding at midday with a wrap-up by Prof. dr. Miles Glendinning (University of Edinburgh). This will be followed by architectural visits planned for the afternoon of Friday, 8 December, and a post-congress tour provided by DOCOMOMO Belgium on Saturday, 9 December – More about the congress

NL – De eigen woning van architect Leon Stynen ligt op de hoek van de Camille Huysmanslaan en de Volhardingstraat in Antwerpen. De woning werd tussen 1932 en 1934 opgetrokken in de stijl van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. Het is een rechthoekig gebouw van drie bouwlagen met een kleine voortuin. De vlakke lijstgevels zijn opgetrokken met gele baksteen, met een parement van natuursteen op de begane grond. Naast de privé-inkom, aan de Camille Huysmanslaan, bevinden zich ronde venstertjes, die verwijzen naar patrijspoorten. De woning werd in 1995 beschermd als monument.

10:30 – 11:30 | Hof ten Bos, 1938 (Brasschaat)

With the construction of sanatoriums and open-air schools, the battle against tuberculosis began in the Interbellum. In “Hof Ten Bos”, children could stay and play in a green environment. The spacious entrance hall was also the large covered playground with extended outdoor terraces. On the floor there were two dorms, 35 beds for boys and 35 for girls plus a terrace for morning gymnastics. For the art integration, J. Van Vlasselaer was called and M. Senecaut designed the garden. Originally designed as a open-air school and holiday resort, is now part of a classical school complex. Protected as a monument since 1995.

12:15 – 12:45 | Residency Elsdonck, 1931-1934/1936 (Wilrijk)

Léon Stynen is commissioned by the Bogaers brothers to design a free standing apartment building located in the green and on the road between Brussels and Antwerp. A total of 16 apartments and 6 shops with a living area. They are spacious, luxury apartments with accompanying comfort: two concierge, doorman’s log and rooms at the top for the home staff. On the ground floor a restaurant with connecting to the first floor has a tearoom with large terrace. A sophisticated material and color choice. Vertical circulation is in balance with the horizontal window composition. The construction phase is short by using a steel skeleton. The facades are raised in brick. Since 1988, the building has been protected as a monument. In 1996, the building was thoroughly restored.

14:45 – 15:30 | Office building RTT, 1959-1965 (Brussels) 

NL – Het Telex-gebouw werd in de jaren zestig door Léon Stynen ontworpen voor de Regie van Telefonie en Telegrafie. Het voor die tijd vooruitstrevende kantoorgebouwen bevindt zich boven de ondergrondse noord-zuidverbinding in hartje Brussel. Het kantoorgebouw bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit een betonnen skelet, zichtbaar in de gevels, met invulling van natuursteen voor de blinde delen. De hoge raampartijen brengen het licht tot diep in het gebouw. Het in 1958 opgeleverde gebouw was op velerlei vlak een technisch hoogstandje Crepain Binst Architecture renoveerde het pand in 2008-2011 tot een duurzaam kantoorgebouw. Hoewel het gebouw niet is beschermd, is uit respect voor de historisch waardevolle architectuur besloten om de bestaande gevels intact te laten maar ze wel grondig te restaureren voor wat het betonskelet en de plaatsing van thermisch onderbroken raamprofielen met gepaste beglazing naargelang de oriëntatie betreft.

15:45 – 17:00 | School Peterpan, 1962-1967 (St-Gillis)

The Peter Pan School was conceived by the architect Léon Stynen and his associate Paul De Meyer in 1962 and built between 1963-67. The irregular U-shape plan develops 3 wings around the playground; both lateral wings were upraised between 1970-73. Inserted in a highly dense residential neighborhood of the end of the 19thcentury with mostly eclectic architecture, the school can be inscribed into the brutalist movement with its austere white painted concrete, the dialogue between horizontal-vertical elements (stair case – wings), indentations and open-close volumes (galleries, loggias, balconies, pergolas).
