Pieter De Bruyne (1931-1987) and the struggle between industry and craft

In the work of interior architect and furniture designer Pieter De Bruyne (1931-1987) critical thinking was central. De Bruyne was strongly influenced by contemporary developments in the Belgian design culture, which – according to him – stood in the way of authenticity and originality. The way in which the furniture industry let itself being seduced by the lowest common denominator, and the primacy of high selling numbers, according to De Bruyne, strongly reduced the significance of the designer. As a means of criticism and in order to turn the tide, he focused specifically on craft and the exclusively manufactured design. This choice led him to alternative, innovative projects, which can be considered as extraordinary in the period and context. De Bruyne developed a very personal vision and design approach, which was applied in countless private interiors, shop decoration and furniture pieces. Many of these projects from the 1960s to 1980s have remained intact until this day thanks to the care and insight of the clients. Notwithstanding the value of the entire oeuvre, only De Bruyne’s private residence has been protected as a monument. His entire private archive is kept at the Ghent Design Museum. In 2012, the oeuvre of De Bruyne was synthesized in a Catalogue raisoné and in an exposition Pieter De Bruyne (1931-1987). Pioneer of Postmodernism.
