Scope

For the 29th time, the architecture faculties and departments of Gent University, KU Leuven, the University of Antwerp, the University of Hasselt, the Free University Brussels (VUB), the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the University of Liège and the University of Louvain are organizing a Joint Doctoral Seminar in the History and Theory of Architecture.

This edition runs in conjunction with the international conference ‘Theory’s History that will take place at the Brussels Royal Academy on February 9-10, 2017. For this reason, this JDS session will preferably host papers that connect with the conference’s theme; i.e. we particularly welcome papers dealing with theoretical issues from a historical perspective.

The seminar will feature two types of presentations:

  1. Lightning Talks (5’) presenting recently started PhD work. There is no limit to the number oflightning talks.
  2. Full paper presentations (20’) of advanced PhD research. Exceptionally, this JDS will be limited to halfa day only. Consequently, there is room for only 4 to 5 paper presentations, commented by thekeynote speakers of the Theory’s History conference.

After the JDS, participants are welcome to join the opening lecture of the ‘Theory’s History’ Conference by Lucasz Stanek at 18h, same venue.

Calendar/Procedure

For the Lightning Talks: send an abstract (300 w) of your PhD project along with the permission of your thesis advisor. For the paper presentations, presenters will be selected on the basis of 1) an abstract (300 w), clearly outlining the topic and working hypothesis of the paper; 2) a statement regarding the methodological or conceptual issues the candidates wishes to discuss with the referee. The requested materials should be send to annefrancoise.morel@kuleuven.be before 15/12/2016. Selected participants will be notified by 22/12/2016. Selected presenters must send their work to their respective referees at least two weeks before the JDS. Failing to do so will result in cancelling your participation.

Venue

JDS #29 will take place at Paleizenstraat 70, B?1030 Brussels from 14?17h, the same venue as the Theory’s History conference opening session. The campus is only a 10’ walk from Brussels North Station. Tram line n°93 has a stop right in front of the building (Lefranq). There is no easy of free car parking in the immediate surroundings.
