30th Joint Doctoral Seminar in History and Theory of Architecture

Scope and format

The architecture faculties and architectural engineering departments of KU Leuven, Université Catholique de Louvain, Université de Liège, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Universiteit Antwerpen, Universiteit Gent, Universiteit Hasselt and Vrije Universiteit Brussel are organizing the 30th edition of the Joint Doctoral Seminar (JDS) series in the History and Theory of Architecture.

The seminar will feature two types of presentations:

1) Plenary Lightning Talks (10’) presenting recently started PhD work or new research projects by junior or senior academics.

2) Workshop Presentations (10’) presenting a summary of an unpublished article or chapter of a PhD thesis in one of the three parallel workshops.This text will be circulated among the participants of the workshop beforehand. The participants in each workshop are asked to have read the papers. Both academics and junior researchers participating in the workshop will be invited to review and comment on the papers. In each workshop a moderator and an invited academic guest will direct the discussion.The workshop presentations should focus on one of the three workshop themes:
a) Architectural research and historical methods
b) Architectural research, practice and policies
c) Architectural research and concepts from the social sciences

After the workshops, a plenary debate will be organised in which the invited guests are asked to interpret the results of the workshop and position the ndings in an international research context, and more generally, to engage in a discussion about particular challenges for doctoral research in the expanded eld of architectural history and theory.

Calendar and procedure

For the LightningTalks: send an abstract (300 words) on your project.

For the Workshop Presentations: send an abstract (300 words) on your text, indicating in which one of three thematic workshops you wish to present.

Abstracts should be written in English and submitted before 15/09/2017. Selected participants will be notied by 01/10/2017.

Selected workshops presenters must send their full papers (max. 3.000 words) by 01/12/2017.

Venue

JDS #30 will take place at the Victor Bourgeois Auditorium of the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre-Horta (ULB), Place Flagey 19, 1050 Brussels, from 09.30 am to 6.00 pm.
